Tuğrul Selçuk - GMO “SEED” - 1

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have long been a threat to our health and our future. The “scary impacts” of this plague brought over by multinationals and greedy local entrepreneurs should soon be exposed... The European Union has been taking precautions against the perils of these products, bringing into effect new control systems...

Whereas in Turkey, the only “precaution” to regulate this issue is an “acting order” which is being abused by these entrepreneurs who find loopholes thus making this country the best market for “genetically modified” products... Just for the sake of making more money our traditional “cultural seeds” are being systematically eradicated and replaced by GMO seeds and local producers are encouraged to become “addicted” through attractive campaigns and the support of multinational agricultural producers...

My reason for making this exhibition has been the ambiguity of how and when the “side effects” of these agricultural chemicals, hormones and genetically modified organisms forced upon human life will become evident.

With the sensitivity of a human and an artist, my artistic approach to the relation between environment and life was the combination that gave life to this exhibition; it is the result of my individual reaction as a first step of my “responsibility” despite the fact that it will not ease my worries regarding the future. With the expression of contemporary art, while separating it from its own problematic and turning it into a global mechanism of reaction, I have reproduced with the hope of the fruitfulness of a seed the fact that “plastic” becomes the “ironic symbol” of the frightful expectancy of an “aesthetic” form.

I also tried to explain in my own way the contradiction between the relation of art + life as a result of how we are captured by dazzling media techniques regarding market conditions such as “more products”, “more money”, “more riches” that are forced upon us through advertisements and display deceptions...

I invite all environment conscious people who look to a healthy future to develop an awareness regarding GMOs, to protect and encourage the use of our own cultural seeds by standing up against the traditional “genocide of cultural seeds”, and to visit my exhibition.
